Next Commission - Jen's Portrait

Jen's Portrait
8x10 inches
Graphite and coloured pencils on drafting film
Almost on top of all the commissions. The joy for me, is the variety of subjects and mediums that are requested which means each commission is a new challenge and there is never time for boredom to set in. I am ever grateful for the opportunity to do art on a full-time basis and, hopefully, bring some happiness to people along the way!!!!

What a great piece, Karen! The kids are gorgeous and this so looks like an old B & W photo!

wonderful...its your ability to draw that I love the most...when I draw there are often wrong angles , and wrong proportions etc....did you ever have this problem.Truly wonderful...

Thank you Bridie and Sherry.
I still get angles and proportions wrong sometimes Bridie, but I think I've had so much practice now, that it is getting easier. I would struggle on an architecture piece or something with a lot of perspective. With portraits, I am usually looking at shapes and negative spaces, rather than the whole face. A wonderful trick I have learnt is to turn the portrait upside down, and I always do this to check the eyes, because our brains sometimes trick us into believing the proportions are correct - turn it upside down and you realise they're not.
Sherry the reference photo was an old coloured photo - my kids said it look old too - I was trying to pick what about the image dates it, but I'm not sure.

Karen,

This dual portrait shows what a master you are with drawing hair!

Thanks for your comment earlier today--- Your work definitely inspires my efforts in pencil!

I was reading over one of your demos the other evening and one question I have for you is: on these recent works, when you do black and white (or with just a spot of color like this), are you using a black 'colored' pencil (oil-based?), or graphite?

Thank you Mona, - most of this is done with graphite pencil (2H, HB or 2B), then a mechanical graphite pencil (HB) for the darker values and a black polychromo pencil for the darkest values.

Karen, this is an awesome drawing! Of course, it really helps when you have such adorable subjects! I love how you have such high contrast, and yet you've kept is so "soft" looking.
