ACEO - Sunkissed

Sunkissed
2.5 x 3.5 inches
Graphite and coloured pencil on drafting film.
One of the things I admire most in other artists is a wonderful imagination and the ability to create beautiful artworks without relying heavily on reference photos. This is an area, I feel I need a lot of development, particularly for illustration work. The Flower Folk and this ACEO are some of my early efforts which I hope will vastly improve over time. Whilst I still used some reference photos in these cases, I tried to avoid referring to photos too much. Commissions often require an artist to do a very close copy of one or several reference photos, and this is an area I find relatively easy. I believe to be truly artistic, it is necessary to extend beyond this, and whilst I'm not truly happy with any of my attempts over the last couple of weeks, I'm hoping with practice, to eventually produce work that is both creative and also to a standard I am happy with.

I find each of your 'fantasy' pieces a delight, Karen. I am so glad you haven't morphed into anime style with them too. They are so whimsical, so fresh and true.

Karen, you know what? I think this piece has more of YOU in it than anything else that I've seen. This is just so gorgeous!

I find when I'm doing photo driven pieces that must strictly adhere to the image, I sometimes lose something in the process. When it's just me, a bit of paper and a pencil, I can go wild. And it's a whole lot less stress not having to match colours or shapes perfectly! "Happy Accidents" are the order of the day.

I really think you should explore this so much more - she is so soft I almost thought you had a filter over her (a bit like Liz Taylor and the vaso on the camera lense!)

Cheers,

Cindy

You are always so motivating Cindy. When in doubt a bit of retail therapy always helps, I find. I remember you saying you bought a Wacom tablet, and I decided to bite the bullet and got one today. Have you played with yours much? I am really looking forward to playing with my new toy over Easter!!! I hope you and your family have a wonderful Easter, especially with all that is going on for you guys - has your house been fixed yet? Take care, Karen

Karen, you lucky lucky girl! That Easter Bunny has a knack of knowing what you want when chocolate isn't enough!

I never bought the tablet at the Demo I went to at Officeworks as they had already sold out! (it was the Bamboo model - quite small).

It's still on the wishlist, but I've just ordered a lightbox - a heap of the Calligraphy Guild members have ordered them recently as they are on special. It saves an inordinate amount of time as you are saved the tedious task of "ruling up" guidelines on thicker papers (like watercolour or illo board).

So what tablet model did you go for?

And alas, no repairs started yet - still being handled by the insurers - apparently they are up to 89,000 lodged claims and $650mil so far - watch out next year's premiums!

Cheers,

Cindy
