Step by Step Tutorial II for Fine Art & Decorative Painting

Some of you may remember this image from when I painted it for the Illustrators Australia 2009 9x5 Exhibition. This time I have drawn it using coloured pencils on drafting film, for a step by step tutorial which will available in a few months from the Fine Art & Decorative Painting Magazine. The tutorial will list all the different pencils used to draw this (believe it or not it took over 41 different pencils) and includes seven progress images. Drafting film is a wonderful surface for drawing eyes, because of it's smoothness, making it easy to achieve the glassy look of an eyeball, and so the principals explained in this tutorial can be applied when drawing any eye.

I do remember you doing the drawing of this eye before.

Hope it is soon.

Thank you Dors - I really am not sure how long it will be before the tutorial will be published, but I think not before June. The tutorial I did on graphite portraits will come out the month before, and I think that one is due out May - will keep you posted :)

Beautiful Karen! And congratulations on getting that article in the magazine! I know it's been a hope of yours for some time now. I am actually doing a colored pencil drawing on drafting film right now, but I'm doing it as a drawing so I can paint with acrylics over it. I've said it before - I can't do soft. Without the teeth, I can't get as deep of color values on the drafting film with the pencils. But I LOVE the surface for acrylics. I haven't tried oils yet.

Congratulations on the article Karen! Wow, 41 colors~~~perhaps one of the secrets of colored pencil (like pastels) is to have lots of colors to choose from!

Will definitely look for the magazine here in the U.S. and would enjoy reading this.

Thank you Sherry - you are always so supportive and lovely with your comments!!!
Deb your own style is just wonderful - so vivid and colourful. I haven't tried acrylics on drafting film, but you have inspired me to give it a go. This is actually the second article for this magazine. I think the first one is due out in May or June, this one will be the month after, and then they have commissioned one more.
Thank you Mona - I know the magazine is distributed in the US and is also available on-line so will let you know.
