Commissioned Illustration - Sunset Gathering

Sunset Gathering
9x12 inch
Watercolours, ink and coloured pencil on Canson Mi-teintes Tex Paper
Here is the illustration that I mentioned in my previous post. After starting it a couple of times, a couple of months ago, I initially told the client that it was probably too far removed from what I normally do, and that I didn't feel I could create exactly what she was after. My instinct has always been to paint and draw in a photorealistic style, and this particular client (she has the patience of a saint!) wanted something that looked a bit more cartoon like, and this was a quite a struggle for me. Those of you who follow my blog will know that lately I have been experimenting with different styles and genres, in an effort to move away from the tight style of realism, to something a little more creative. Many people appreciate realistic art more than art that is more illustrative, but to be honest, I find photorealism much easier to achieve. I was frustrated with myself for not completing the illustration when it was first commissioned, and was determined to persevere to completion - I started it again four times in the last week! I'm not sure if I am completely happy with it even now, but at least I have the satisfaction of knowing that I completed it!!!

The new Beatrix Potter (with a little Bambi thrown in)!

I love this style Karen, you've created a fantasy land that is real in it's own right.

I try not to compare styles anymore, it is what it is. I remember having to do countless Name Plaques for new born babes, always with Beatrix Potter or Thomas Tank characters intertwined in the child's name. I would never have chose that style for myself, but for kid's rooms, it's the thing they enjoy.

I'm sure your client will be well pleased!

Thank you Cindy - you are always so encouraging. I would say you could put your hand to any style asked of you - you are so versatile and talented. I think it is good for any artist to get out of their comfort zone, but it can be a challenge!!!

Karen, this is a lovely piece. I can relate to having clients who want something a bit different. That's why, anymore, I just insist on a photo for commissions. A friend of mine recently asked me to help her design a t-shirt for the reunion of the arts high school she graduated from. I gave her some ideas, but declined in the end, because she was looking for a graphic artist, and that's just not my style. You are so brave to attempt and complete this piece!

Thank you Deb - I guess it is always easier to do what we are best at, but I was so frustrated with myself for not completing the illustration, so I'm happy that I did.

Still, you have managed to capture whimsy and my imagination with this lovely piece, Karen. I tend to enjoy a photorealistic style myself, but really enjoy whimsy too. You have done a great job here!

This IS away from your usual way of working, Karen, but I think you've achieved your goal. This is so cute! I can't believe you started it four times!!! That sound like something I would do! Good luck in your explorations. It is good for us to get out of our comfort zones. It can bring interesting surprises our way!

Hey Karen, I too experiment a lot. For me its to get away from something realistic, Id almost feel I was happy to paint like a cartoon. Keep trusting your instincts, I absolutely love this piece, youve created a whole new world, its a real gift)

Karen, Welcome to the miniature fine art group on yahoo! Now you've got me wondering who else I know online that I assumed was a member there, but isn't!

What a gorgeous illustration! It's full of dreams and love. Now, you need a story to go with it. :-)
I love to be able to do this type of work, but it's so difficult for me.

Thank you so much Akiko - it is really hard for me too but I am trying to stretch myself :)
