Unlocking Old Secrets

Unlocking Old Secrets
9x5 inches
Acylics on Plywood
This is my entry for the 2010 9x5 Illustrator's Australia Exhibition, where the theme is 'Untold Stories'.
Well, we all know it is a woman's perogative to change her mind, so after several weeks of experimenting and pulling my hair out, I have now decided to offer commissioned portraits in acrylics, rather than coloured or graphite pencil, I redid a commissioned portrait a couple of times last week for a very patient client, and whilst unfortunately I can't post the image at this stage, I was really happy with the results. I will spend this week doing a few more to include with my listings. Being an artist is never dull!!!

I know you will be feeling happy with your decision regarding the portraits. I can see you are a person that doesn't give up easily.

I don't think its just about our perogative to change our minds ... I often find having declared how smitten I am with a medium/paper/technique the novelty wears off, motivation dwindles and depression sets in (!!) Any change is as good as a rest when that happens ...

I really hope you'll continue to show us some work in coloured and graphite pencil ... you're so good at them

Karen, I absolutely love this piece! It is whimsical and yet speaks to that part of me that often feels the need to write write write. Secrets and darkness yet innocent. Lovely!

Thank you so much Sue and Sherry - I'm so glad you like this one Sherry. Sue, I know what you mean. I wish I had the personality to stick with one thing and really master it, but I seem to have this inner yearning to keep trying new things - crazy eh!!!

What a fun piece Karen, and so masterfully crafted! I'm sorry to hear you are not doing the graphite and CP portraits anymore. I always marveled at how soft they turned out...like powder on a glass surface. But you are equally talented no matter what media you work in!

Karen you are Australia's own Miss Potter, but in acrylics! This is such a beautiful, mythical piece - cannot wait to see your portraits!

I think being an artist is a bit like being a chef - you strive to master new recipes, new ingredients, building that knowledge base in your head so that you can push those boundaries to come up with something new.

The more mediums the merrier I say!

Thank you Deb, Akiko and Cindy - I always enjoy all your comments!!! I may go back to pencil one day Deb, but am really enjoying the ability to work over mistakes that acrylics give, so I'm not constantly worried if things aren't going well.
Hear! Hear! Cindy I know you get it!!!
